This research project explored the expansion of the universe and its accelerating rate, leading us to ponder our place in the vast cosmic landscape.

During my time at UC Berkeley, I was privileged to work with the esteemed Professor Alex Filipenko, whose passion for understanding the universe has left a profound impact on both the scientific community and myself. As a member of his research team, I utilized custom-built software tools to analyze images from the KAIT telescope, leading to the discovery of previously unknown distant type 1a supernovae.
These celestial events provide a unique spectrogram "fingerprint" that acts as a "standard candle" to establish redshift, which in turn helps us determine the distance from Earth to the galaxy hosting the supernova, as well as its velocity away from our planet. This information proved to be vital in understanding the shape and ultimate fate of the universe, leading to the groundbreaking discovery of dark energy, an elusive force responsible for the accelerating expansion of the cosmos.
Working on this project allowed me to delve into the mysteries of the universe and explore fundamental laws of nature, which hold profound implications for our lives and our understanding of existence. The vast scale and enigma of the cosmos serve as a humbling reminder of our role in it, inspiring us to continue seeking answers to the big questions that remain yet to be uncovered.
